Actually I would argue that Trump is more to blame for the Mueller appointment which was two months after Sessions recused.
The point of no return for the Trump Russia Hoax was this very moment.
He just fired James Comey in the most ham fisted way possible and point blank told the world in the interview with NBC he fired Comey because of Russia with absolutely no nuance to it possible. Just blurted out Russia.
RUSSIA.
After that, it was inevitable that Rosenstein would crack and appoint a special counsel.
That was pure stupidity on Trump's part and no one forced him to do that. His own staff tried to stop him and he still went ahead with the interview.
