Yeah that’s a simple explanation all right.
I’m guessing these guys are way smarter than I am and ruled out the possibility that the earth’s surface could be the source of these high-energy neutrinos. If so, that’s definitely interesting.

They are probably so smart that they overlooked a flaw in their experiment that a 9th grade science teacher with some common sense would spot right away.
