I remember some years ago, one team dropped their passports at a gas station in LA during the drive from the episode 1 start line to LAX. The people who found it figured out they were on the Amazing Race, got it to the lost and found at LAX, and the contestants were able to keep going.

I ran into Phil and a producer at LAX once. I didn't see anyone else so I assumed they were ahead of the contestants.
