When I was 14, my brother had dropped me off at the one little single-screen theater in our home town. It was a Saturday night, I'd already seen the movie they were showing the night before, so I was out in the empty lot next to the theater smoking with some guys. My parents pulled up in front and my dad went inside. A friend saw them and came and told me they were there. I went in, all worried about smelling like cigarettes, and found my dad.

They were there to tell me my brother had been in a wreck, had a head injury, and was being flown to Jackson because the local hospital didn't do brain surgery. Never spoke to my brother again as he died on the way to Jackson.

Wish you'd asked for the funniest thing that had happened at a theater so I could tell about leaving a girl with her pants, and panties around her ankles with her rabbit coat over her, a couple of weeks before then. Or when I was on a double date at the drive-in, and I had to ask my friend if he had Kleenex in his car.
