Haven't read it, but my understanding is that it is pretty much the movie, except with Comanche instead of Lakota Sioux.
The Blake initially wrote it as a script, and no one in Hollywood would do anything with it. Costner (I think) told him to turn it into a book because Hollywood was more likely to adapt it from a book. So he did. It finally got published, and Costner bought the rights to it.
