They’re way overpaid. The only reason their professional league doesn’t fold is because the federation keeps it propped up. In a free market they would be in trouble

That's part of the reason they've made such a big deal out of this and why they play so many pointless friendlies. They need the money. Their league is so poor that many of the players not good enough for the national team have second jobs in the off season. The national team pays their salaries. It's not like the men who get most of their pay from their regular teams.

IMO the real problem they're facing is that the rest of the world is catching up to them. the US was dominant at this sport because we were the only ones who put money into it. The Europeans are getting better and better though. The big teams over there are forming women's teams and they're getting coached by male former players. England, France and Germany in particular seem to be taking women's soccer somewhat seriously, and with the coaching they're going to be getting over there I could see our own team dropping.
