Exactly what I said for 40 years...until I watched their documentary "A Long Strange Trip" about 6 weeks ago.
I happened to be inside the phish "movement" during the mid 90s right after Jerry died. Very surreal at times. It's also hard to describe their music back then, because it was so different from everything else at the time.
You should go check out Furthur or Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD).
