Exactly what I said for 40 years...until I watched their documentary "A Long Strange Trip" about 6 weeks ago.

A friend of mine just had the same experience from that same documentary. "A long strange trip" was really good and explained the "movement." The song choices and placement were perfect throughout. Also, it showed how they were/are all really good musicians who pushed each other both on and off stage throughout their career.

I happened to be inside the phish "movement" during the mid 90s right after Jerry died. Very surreal at times. It's also hard to describe their music back then, because it was so different from everything else at the time.

You should go check out Furthur or Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD).
