It could have been a naturally occurring virus that was being researched in a lab and containment protocols failed. That would be embarrassing and I could see the Chinese wanted to cover it up. If you have any links to from reputable sources that indicate it was an engineered virus I would like to see it.

"By comparing the available genome sequence data for known coronavirus strains, we can firmly determine that SARS-CoV-2 originated through natural processes," said Kristian Andersen, PhD, an associate professor of immunology and microbiology at Scripps Research and corresponding author on the paper."
