Mask is a small part of it, meticulously washing hands and not touching face is more important. If you wear a mask, it will live on that for hours to days, so when you take it off you have it on your hands.

Regular masks have evidence to suggest they help block an infected person's virus droplets from hitting the open air. So good for symptomatic people.
Not much evidence to support prevention from getting it. So not great for asymptomatic people.
