Scott's Bonus S

I will admit that I don't know shite from shinola when it comes to pre-emergent, post emergents, nitrogen, soil tests, etc so I just bought a bag of Scott's Bonus S and spread it on 3/14. Then I started to read this board and everybody is throwing shade at Bonus S. I cut my grass last Saturday which was two weeks after putting the Bonus S down and I almost need to cut my yard again. Will definitely have to start cutting once per week from now on and I would imagine at this rate will need to cut mid week and on the weekend during the summer. I have centipede in my front yard and St. Augustine in the back yard.

It’s fine if your yard is decent to start with. If it’s weedy, you’re jump staring the weeds as well as the grass

I think a fairly high percentage of the Scotts Bonus S lawn fertilizer has fast release nitrogen so you are going to see the results fairly quickly if the grass is in active growth. I think the shade you are referring to has more with the use of combination weed & feed fertilizers in general, regardless of brand or who makes them, because often it’s to early to fertilize lawns when weeds need to be treated, and if one waits for the proper time to fertilize then you may have missed the best time to treat weeds. Many of us prefer to control weeds and fertilize lawns as two separate activities when the timing is optimal for both. Weed & Feeds are no more than a convenience product for the consumer to try to kill two bird with one stone.
But there is a narrow window of time that you can apply a weed & feed product, whether it’s Scotts or another brand, and get the benefit of both the weed and the feed activities.
I also have a centipede front and St Augustine back. Centipede requires half the dose of nitrogen that St Augustine, and if Im not mistaken Scotts doesn’t tell you to use half the application rate on the centipede. In the short term you won’t see any negative effects of that action, but a few + years down the the road you might experience centipede decline and you’ll never associate it with the fact it was caused by your centipede receiving too much nitrogen fertilizer (well I suppose you will now since I’ve told you).
But at the end of the day it is fertilizer, it’s going to green your lawn. Don’t think anyone has implied that Scotts Bonus S wouldn’t do that, except for that time they mixed some bad batches of weed and feed and killed a bunch of peoples’ lawns and then had pay the customers for replacing their lawn.

I don't hate Scott's either. I worked for them for 3 years. I do prefer separating my ferting and weed control.
More about the mowing that you mentioned. Unfortunately your lawn doesn't know what the weekend means so sometimes it will not wait until the weekend to be cut. You should cut it when it needs it. Never more than 1/3 of the blade and the grass needs to be cut at the correct height for the grass type.

I think that was when Scott's was using methyl instead of atrazine as its herbicde in the product. They screwed up and burnt some yards.
I personally like the product. Its a small homogeneous prill that spreads very evenly. What I don't understand are the commercials where the prill will stick to the weed. That's an absolute lie. The Atrazine in Bonus S will kill weeds....if sprayed at the correct rate. What it does on the prill is create a pre-emergent barrier to stop more weeds from forming.
People always wonder why the weeds don't die...cause that ain't how the product works. They should call it Pre and Feed.
