These things are a PITA in my raised garden. They grow up through all the soil and suck to try to pull them out.

These are in the yard itself

Pepper Vine - many confuse with poison ivy. Best way to kill is to cut at the ground and “paint” the cut stem with trichlopyr. Keep doing it as they pop up and you’ll eventually kill them all. Here’s the product I use - there are other brands of the same product - all the same chemical formulation. Bonide Stump and Vine Killer

That looks more to me like a seedling elderberry

I retract my opinion. Does look like Pepper Vine.

Definitely peppervine, not elderberry. Elderberry is pure green (not reddish green), with more elongated leaflets, and no (or less) serations on the edges.

It's the pepper vine; thanks for that ID!

I will try your method

PSA to anyone thinking about growing elderberry. I planted several 2 years ago for wildlife in the backyard - grow fast and look nice, but I’ve found out now they send out rhizomes below ground that pop up everywhere including the St Augustine lawn. I’m going to remove them this fall. Would be great plant for someone with plenty area, maybe along a fence line and doesn’t mind the spread. I’ve dug up a bunch of runners and potted to give to someone who wants to do just that.

I know I’ll need to treat with trichlopyr to rid myself of them. Lesson learned.

Godspeed. I have those in the yard and I’ve pulled out miles of root trying to get rid of them.

i have it everywhere on the edge of the woods and the damn birds drop the seeds in my beds and under my big fruit trees

once in, its there forever unless elderberry pulling is your full time job
