Where would you rank George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth in American legends?

I think after George Washington, Babe Ruth is the second most revered American hero.

Seriously, do you know an American that doesn’t know who Babe Ruth is?

He’s like Paul Bunyan or John Henry except real and not lore.

Maybe this would be better on the MSB, move it if so.

Do you even Ben Franklin bro? Thomas Jefferson?

Dudes know who the Babe is, that’s it.

While Jefferson is my favorite founding father, I wouldn’t say he’s a bigger American legend than Ruth.

He’s certainly a famous athlete.

Muhammed Ali and Tiger Woods are probably as well known.

Arnold Palmer.

I think Mantle is the most talented person to ever lace his spikes up. What would’ve been had he not torn up his knees.

It’s hard to compare them with the Babe though. They both had the luxury of television being in every house and essentially 24 hour news media. Babe didn’t and here we are, speaking about him still almost 100 years later.

Hell, radio wasn’t even in every household when Babe played.

Both statements are great bar room discussions.

Mantle is also an interesting study on how childhood events can shape your life and Outlook. The early death of his father led him to lead a life which probably cost him as much productivity as his injuries. He said it influenced his decision to drink and party way too much.

Anyway...

Babe was not only an icon, but quite a character. Larger than life fits him well.

I do think the boozing wasn’t as bad as the knee problem though. A shitload of players were/are boozehounds. Hard to swing a bat when you’ve got the knees of a much older man and he still hit over 500 home runs and had over 2,000 hits. 20x allstar!!

He is that, although Bonds was a better power hitter.

Bonds, McGuire, and Sosa hit all those homeruns on steroids.

It took Hank like 3000 more at bats to break Babe's record.

Babe did it on beer and hotdogs. Sometimes between innings.
