Garden hose fittings/couplings size

Are all fittings/couplings on standard garden hoses the same size? Do I have to consider the size of my spigot before buying a garden hose? My outdoor spigot is 1/2”.
I recently returned a hose because the connector did not fit on my spigot. Didn’t think I would need help with a garden hose but here we are.

You sure it's not 5/8"
The standard hose fitting size is either 3/4" or 5/8"

I just had a plumber come out and put a new one on because the pipe was leaking. He left the tag on and it says 1/2”

The 1/2" tag probably indicates the size of the pipe coming from the house to the faucet. 1/2" inlet with a 3/4" or 5/8" hose connection.

Good point. So all that said, how do I go about making sure I get the right size hose based on how it fits onto the spigot?

Your washing machine hose is 3/4" if you want to try it. If it doesn't fit it's a 5/8"
