Wonder the impact he would've made on the NBA had he not been afflicted with the heart condition, him and Pete Maravich, hearts just betrayed them luckily for us Pete provided us with a sterling college and pro career

Zags were known for John Stockton and nothing else back then.
Their NCAA tournament Cinderella emergence came 9 years later.
4 years after Gathers died the Zags qualified for their first post-season tournament, the NIT.

UNLV literally beat them at their own game.

Yeah because they had more talent.
So did LSU.
Talented teams could outscore LMU if they were in shape.
Alabama slowed it down to a whisper because they were slow and fat in the Sweet 16...literally held the ball and almost won.
But those pussies fouled all game long and held the ball and still lost by 2 points in the lowest scoring game Loyola had played that year.

I loved that “ Running The System” LMU and eventually George Mason ran
That was Paul Westhead’s system. Problem is he hit lightning in a bottle with Gathers and Kimble.
His system most people didn’t want to sacrifice to. So he couldn’t get good players.
