Why is the tax system set up that way for athletes? If my employer sends me to eight different states to perform work, I don’t have to file in all of those locations.

I've got news for you. It's not just for athletes. If you work in eight different states, you absolutely could have to file in all of those locations.

Yea pretty sure you do have to pay taxes in those locations

Then you don’t make enough to have to or you don’t work there long enough. I had to file in 6 states a few years ago

Depends on the state, have you ever worked in New Mexico? They require your employer to pay them the state withholding for any time you work within the state. And they are very aggressive about pursuing that. Your employer may try and skirt that with them but that could end up biting them in the butt. Many states have a minimum dollar value which athletes will always meet but you may not.
