Not sure there's a wrong or right way... short of doing something wrong over and over again. I'm sure there's a study; however it's probably better at this time to just play. Play to learn, play to pass these times, and play for enjoyment.

I've done it both ways. Learning for the sake of making it presentation quality and for just getting exposed to more new stuff. And for me both were helpful. Another thing I thought helpful was to open up a song on the ultimate guitar site and play through different versions. To me this helps your with ear training and not just muscle memory. It'll help you learn to trust your ear.
