I just got done watching a little over half of it. Of all of the movies I've seen, this one is my least favorite. I tried watching more of it, but I just couldn't take it. I didn't find any of the "funny parts" funny. Can someone who likes this movie explain what is so great about it?

If you don't find any of the shite that the drill sergeant says to Pyle funny, you have no sense of humor

Umm I'm afraid I don't understand, I don't know what to say about this. Any of it.

The first half is easily the best USMC movie of all time. The second half is not as good as the first but still entertaining. I do not know what to say about you. You seem to have no sense of humor. The crap that came out of Gunny's mouth was the same thing I heard in USMC bootcamp. Sometimes I wanted to laugh, but I knew that the Drill Instructers would rip out my eyes and skull frick me ...so I didn't.

Then I guess I have no sense of humor.

ETA: I didn't find the drill seargent funny because:

1. He didn't do a great job of acting.
2. I talk like that on an everyday basis so I really didn't find it that funny
3. What was with the crazy marine? What did that have to do with anything? Why was that even a part of the movie?

Was the movie trying to be a comedy? Trying to be a portrayal of the USMC? It made no sense.

i have always preferred the basic training part of the movie better than the Vietnam part. i typically lose interest after Pyle shoots the drill sergeant.

Sergeant Joker: How can you shoot women and children?
Door Gunner: Easy... you don't lead 'em so much. [laughs] Ain't war hell?

Animal Mother: If I'm gonna get my balls blown off for a word, my word is poontang.

You and I don't share the same sense of humor. I thought the movie was bad but I guess since so many people find it funny, it's me.

FWIW: I'm not like Jerseytiger. I love good modern comedies but for some reason I just didn't find this one all that great.

He didn't have to act, that was really fricking him.

He revolutionized that shite. I'm sure you talk that way because it filtered down to you, starting with him.

I understand why the marine did it but, Cocks, please explain why they needed a crazy marine as a part of the plot.

ETA: Why was that specific character needed? Or if Pile was needed why was that killing scene needed? What did it add to the film?

I'm not sure if you're just joking around but Full Metal Jacket wasn't intended to be a comedy.

And, the drill instructor "acted" perfectly. He was an actual (former) drill instructor so he knew what to do.

Well the only thing people in this thread are talking about is how funny the jokes by the seargent were. Honestly I couldn't tell if the movie was trying to be a comedy or not. Thats why I didn't understand the Pile-killing scene.

Because it was a sign of the times, 90 percent or more of these dudes got drafted to go fight a war they didn't want to be a part of. Mix in a bunch of them with a few gung ho frickers who can't wait to kill and then throw in a shite bird like Piles who constantly fricks up and eventually takes the brunt of everyone's stress, that is what's gonna happen. He was just the example of the worst thing that can happen at boot camp and I think it was very relevant. I am also willing to bet there were several Private Piles during that time, just isn't gonna be very well publicized.

That's because he wasn't acting. Lee Ermey was a DI in real life.

Exactly.

Plus, it was probably something of a commentary on how Gunny Hartman finally succeeded in turning Pyle into a killing machine...only to be killed by what he created.

You'd need to read the book "FMJ" was based on, "The Short-Timers" by Gustav Hasford to fully understand it. It's a very surrealistic look at Vietnam.

When I went thru Army Basic, a couple of cycles before mine, there was a dolt that tried to hang himself by wrapping the cord of the floor buffer around his neck and jumping out of a third floor barracks window. All he managed to do was pull the buffer out of the window with him and break a few bones.

Moral of that story: There are always a few non-hackers who handle the stress of boot camp worse than others.

What? I love modern comedies. 40 Year Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, Mary, Wedding Singer, etc.

I don't like Full Metal Jacket mostly for humor value, though. I just think it's well made. R. Lee Ermey was hired over the actor because he was the actual guy in real life doing it.

I don't think the movie is intended as a comedy.
