Internships are a great way to figure out what you don’t like. This avoids wasting years hating your job.
A job from a big operator doesn’t fall from trees even if you have a high GPA. Their full time pay and benefits won’t be matched except by upstream operations. Moving away for an internship might help you land a full time job closer to home. Consider what the local firm has to offer over the big operator. Unless you hated in the first summer or don’t want to work oil and gas, I would stay with the big operator. Having a big operator on your resume for several years trumps “getting your name out there” and allows you to pick any job that’s hiring your senior year.
