I used to share his sentiment until I had my daughter. I'll spare the details but she has a condition that severely affects her maturity, decision making skills, and behavior yet she looks perfectly normal. I can't tell you how many nasty looks I've been given over the years or unsolicited advice I've received about how to discipline her. She couldn't count to ten before she was twelve years old and people think an arse whooping will straighten her right up. It's infuriating.

Your daughter has an identified disability. You have taken proper steps to identify and deal with the problem.

What about the child in question? Has she been tested? If not, why not?

Everyone blaming this cop. No, her pathetic parents and this horrible school have failed her.

Look at the link oleheat posted. This school is awful. I suspect the parents are pretty bad as well.

No clue. I didn't see it in the article so I'm not assuming either way. If you have any inside info on her home life I'll take it into consideration.

You may have noticed I didn't assign blame in my post because I don't have all the information. My post was directed at people claiming their hypothetical children would never act like that when in many cases the reason for the behavior is out of the parents control. Sure, there's a ton of shitty parents but there are also a lot of parents that are trying to make the most of a bad situation so unless I know what kind of parents they are I try to withhold judgement.

But the urge to post a 'hot take' on the internet is irresistible to some.

Even though you asked this question rhetorically (and ignored the post that I made about her sleep disorder), it’s actually worth addressing.

So first, you’re never going to “just know” that your kid might have a mental health disorder and obviously they won’t either. So if you suspect something, you’re likely going have to find a therapist (you’ll likely cycle through a few) who can actually get your kid to objectively, articulately and accurately explain what they’re experiencing (because small children are fantastic at that right?) before he or she has any clue what’s going on.

So, you’re likely looking at weeks worth of expensive visits, even if you have insurance. Again, this is after you have a reason to even suspect something is wrong.

This isn’t like going to your family doctor and getting your throat swabbed and hearing “yep, Johnny has strep”. There’s no “test” that works that way with mental disorders. It’s a long, often frustrating and typically expensive (even if you have insurance) process. This is why so many mental disorders go undiagnosed.
