How much is Burrow worth to the XFL? The AFL was a joke league before Joe Namath

Asking for a friend.

Seriously. No one thought the AFL would survive before the Jets shattered all NFL rookie contracts when they signed Namath

[Correction: It was Billy Cannon who broke the ice as the first high-profile college player to sign with the AFL]

AFL was competing with much smaller numbers back then.

The NFL owners were rolling in dough. The NFL players got crumbs.

The Namath deal and the AFL contracts after, forced the merger between the AFL and NFL.

I think the max salary for the QBs is higher than the rest, and some are making $495,000. Which is obviously nothing compared to what Burrow stands to make.

TV sports is a business. He's worth the Neilson numbers he would generate.

You have bad information about the AFL. The AFL had financial clout with rich owners and convinced a lot of college stars to sign with them. The AFL was entertaining as hell with free wheeling offenses.
The XFL will fail. They pay poorly and the football sucks. Vince and Luck ain’t getting in a bidding war with the NFL.

The AFL was dead in the water before they went after high-profile college players.

You are overstating “dead in the water”. The number one draft pick in not NFL in 1960 was Billy Cannon. Bud Adams gave Cannon the first $100,000 contract. He initially signed with Pete Rozelle of Los Angeles Rams but this as thrown out in court. This is to say the AFL came in with real money from get go, unlike XFL. Our first Heisman trophy winner was the original bonus baby.

They signed the Heisman trophy winner their first year of existence. Is that not high profile?

The old WFL signed Herschel Walker. Did that help them?

Seriously, you should learn about a topic before you post.

Namath signed for 4 times what Cannon got. Do you seriously believe McMahon won't make offers to high profile college players?

McMahon has made a nice re-start of the XFL in 2020. Would not be surprised to see a few billionaire buddies join him soon.

It was the USFL that signed Herschel Walker.

And there'd be no way that today the XFL would be able to sign any sort of record contract. Back in the AFL days the players were probably "underpaid" relative to the value they generated for the team owners. Maybe the XFL could sign a transfer or academic casualty that otherwise wouldn't be draft eligible and make waves.

Does the XFL have any sort of compensation if a player under contract is desired by an NFL team? Kind of like the European soccer transfer where a club from one league purchases a contract from another league with a "transfer fee".

You are naive beyond belief if you think McMahon isn't trying to find a way to bring players like Tua and Burrow into his league.

And is it a long-shot? Of course it is. But I think McMahon will take a crack at it. Particularly if he can bring in a couple more billionaire partners/owners.
