When a fighter is no longer protecting himself, the ref and/or your corner is responsible for ending the fight.

Wilder was no longer protecting himself. You could even make the argument that the fight should've been stopped in the 6th.

Hell if that would have been a UFC bout in new York state, a doctor would have already stopped the fight between rounds.

I agree with the stoppage, but it’s a much better look for your corner to stop a fight than any of the alternatives. (Getting knocked out, having the ref stop it, or quitting)
