Most of the time, with a runner on second, the Pitcher covers the 3rd base side and the 1st baseman charges. The only time in that situation that the 3rd baseman field the bunt is if it’s bunted hard at him for an easy play. If the 3rd baseman charges then you can easily steal 3rd when the batter squares because 3rd base is left unoccupied.

Correct. Mathis should have been covering second base.
