If you are shooting comparable loads (speed of the load), a 20 will not hit a target any lighter than a 12. It will just have less pellets.

I don’t feel like I’ve got quite the punch of a 12, but I’m also shooting cheap shells. That being said, I’ve got a tighter choke in my top barrel for those follow up shots a little further out.
