One of the subordinates on my team recently complained that his manager wasn’t “outlining his promotions and career path well enough.”
I advised him: Dude, YOU are responsible for earning your promotion.
He was incredibly shook by my comment.

Maybe he wants to be the manager instead of the head fry chef like you. Clearly you don't know how to point him on that direction

This was a pretty dickish response to a reasonable question. Most companies give you an idea of your projected career path. Doesn’t sound like he was asking for a promotion.
