On a WWII kick and looking for stuff like those shows or documentaries, etc. what are the best?
It's a slow burn, but The World at War (British television documentary from the mid-70s, when many participants were relatively young, healthy and in command of their faculties) is the best type of product for that war.
It was free on Amazon prime for years, but not sure now. We used it to teach military history and I've seen all of it several times. Let me put it this way, it is as good for that war as Ken Burns' series is for the American Civil War - that's the highest compliment I can pay to a documentary series - compare it to either one of those.
Victory at Sea is fantastic just for the soundtrack (and if you are into the naval part of it)
For feature films, I'm sure you're aware of the companion pieces on Iwo by Clint Eastwood - if not, Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima make for a great double feature.
Patton remains the finest feature film about the war, with The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far probably right on its heels.
When Trumpets Fade is a more modern film that has a gritty, modern drama feel about it.
Bridge on the River Kwai is a classic, as well. As a pure character piece, The Caine Mutiny (Herman Wouk JUST died a few weeks/months ago) is up there.
Tora, Tora, Tora is another great film that I can recommend.
Mister Roberts and Kelly's Heroes are lighter fare, but also extremely well done film.
