I say 5%. 50% of AA and 10% of the rest of America.

5% of 330 million is a significant amount but not a fraction of what the media will have you believe.

Look how the media played up Whitney Houston's death. The media never passes up a chance to virtue-signal.

I felt bad. And I don't really watch basketball.

Died with his 13 year daughter.

Look. I've always felt that society WAY over reacts to when famous people die. But, they do. And, by that measure, Kobe dying suddenly is relevant. As in, it definitely generates societal interest and a reaction.

I mean, is it relevant in my life? No. Not even slightly. But, I'm not gonna sit here and act like it's some strange twist that it's big news.

Relevant enough to impact their lives in a meaningful way? .0000000001%

Relevant enough to write a self-aggrandizing post on Facebook offering “thoughts and prayers”? 79.2587%

Since I didn't actually answer in my prior post...……..I doubt that the number is over 50% if by "relevant", we mean, "shite people are talking about as if it matters to them".

You have to keep in mind that as strange as it may seem, I'll bet if you grabbed 100 Americans at random, at least 20 wouldn't even know who Kobe Bryant was.

Never under estimate how disconnected people can be.

My 80 year old mother is up set about the whole thing, so that probably says something.

Not to mention every American who has ever held a basketball.

I'd say between 75-85%

That makes it so much worse of an accident, as well as the other individuals the died. My question was about KB only.

Are you sure? It could be 79.2588%

In all seriousness. I think that when someone prominent dies that people grew up watching, they feel it somewhat personally for some reason.

So, for non-basketball fans, it's probably meh. But, for people who watched him constantly for more than decade of their lives, it probably isn't.

Like I said earlier. I've never been much for celebrity and so, I'm not in the "norm" on this subject. But, I do understand those that are.

OP would you say 5% if it was peyton manning or tom brady?

Not everybody watches football. not everybody watches basketball. When a sports icon dies, it's "relevant"

Welcome to America.

I think it’ll be pretty high, tbh. This is one of those events that will cause people to remember where they were when they heard the news in the years to come.

Will it affect my life? Of course not, but Kobe was a fricking great player that seemed to have evolved into a fantastic father to his children and husband to his wife. The man won an Oscar last year, immensely talented talented in other things beside basketball. Not many folks out there like Kobe.

He will be missed.
