Even out here in Cali, LSU is pretty popular with the locals, especially this season. Even prior to this season we were very highly regarded in football, even without a title since 2007. I think the college football fans here really respect the passion that our fan base has especially in comparison to the fanbases out here.

This site supports your analysis. Notre Dame is no where close to having the largest fanbase. Their fans are simply more spread out, most likely due to being the most prominent Catholic university.
