Right but the reason we nip them in the bud so early now is we have health agencies actively educating themselves and the populace and fighting it.
We play a delay game. Eventually a new flu will knock out some significant % of us, like aggressive flus do.
It doesn't mean panic at each one. But stay in the loop.

Worst case estimates are that about 600 million people would die from a novel flu strain before a vaccine could be created and distributed around the world. Influenza viruses don’t mutate nearly as fast as do corona viruses.
This means that a vaccine is likely not an option for this new virus. A deadly strain of corona virus could cause havoc. Fortunately, their propensity to mutate easily also works in our favor. A mutation could cause the virus to become either deadlier, remain as deadly or become even harmless to humans. It’s a crap shoot.
