I've been out of pocket the last week or so - are people really upset at the idea of Pelini being DC?

sadly yes
it has been pathetic.
my guess is a combo of
1) youngsters who never watched him coach and think 52 is an old man.
guess they woulda hated dick lebeau. coached until almost 80 effectively as one of the best DC's ever in the NFL. 2) emotional SJW types who want a stoic, lethargic, non aggressive, NICE GUY...if it all goes to shite they want to be able to say " HE WAS A GOOD MAN"
3) football ignorance due to age and willful laziness (which we have boatloads of here sadly)
4) all 3 of the above
