This is probably not realized by 95% of the public because all they hear is the msm version of "they withheld evidence".
Trump followed the legal procedure and claimed executive privilege with the courts, which they would have no doubt upheld because you just cant "claim" you want something from the president, even if you did have a letter written by your mommy (lawfare).
Schumer tried to remedy this in the senate and was voted down, here is an explanation by Con. Treehouse....

The failure of a full House vote to authorize the House Judiciary Committee to pursue evidence -via enforceable subpoenas- was a defect by design of Nancy Pelosi’s decision to initiate an impeachment inquiry by her decree, not an authorizing vote.
