Is Metro a series that needs to be played in order?

I've never played a single Metro game even though it's always interested me since I like post-nuclear war stuff. I'm thinking about buying Exodus when it goes back to Steam in February.

Will I know what the hell is going on if I start with Exodus and go back to 2033, Last Light, and Redux?

No, but would recommend.

Last Light's story, main character arc and the world's "issues" make much more sense if you play the first.

You won't know the backstory with your wife and her father if you jump to Exodus. I think other than those 2, most of the NPCs are new.

The first two games aren't long. I think each one takes 10 to 15 hours.

Most of the time the redux versions are cheap and great. Right now steam seems to have jacked everything up to the original sale price so I would wait for the next sale because I think they were on sale as a combo pack for 10 bucks.

If you eve play the first 2, you should know finding all of the lore and listening to all of the conversations is actually important. And don't kill people who have given up unless you want the bad endings.

I got stuck on 2033 on the stealth part coming out of the vents.. I tried it a few times and got fed up with it. Haven't gone back since.

You must suck at stealth because I suck at stealth and I don't remember a hard part in the game.

So you really suck.

I just hated the spider things.

I mean I tried that part 3 times and just stopped... I get frustrated if I can't get something done immediately. So I just go on to the next thing. I'll get back to it eventually, and probably soon, since I want to buy Exodus when it comes to Steam in a month.

I’ll probably start with 2033. I just usually find it hard to play older games knowing a newer game with incredible graphics exists.

the grimey "outdated" graphics of 2033 add a nice ambience and effect to the environment imo

plus the graphics aren't that bad anyways.

The Redux bundle is $30 right now and you're right, the graphics look solid.

Most of the game takes place in a dark subway. You won't notice the graphics once the game ramps up.

The gunplay feels awful though.

Its not great but it kind of goes with the cobbled togetherness of the weapons in the world.

Maybe it felt like shtt on consoles?

I played on PC. It didn't feel terrible switching, aiming, etc.

Edt: Or at less not "bad enough" that I would remember it years later.

I don't remember the gun play being bad on PC, either.

but as stated, you are basically duct taping guns and mods together. visibility is low, fear is high, technology is minimum. makes sense that the gunplay isn't as good as Call of Duty MW, imo

The Redux's.. luckily I have the originals. Just need to beat them before Exodus. Then again Exodus will come to Steam full price so I probably won't be buying it for yet another year when it sees a discount even better than it has had on Epic.
