Totally agree and some people don't see a distinction... serial killers are basically all sociopaths... mass shooters are basically all mentally ill.
You can make an argument that a sociopath is also mentally ill, but it is much more akin to having a genetic defect that creates an entire lack of normal human emotion and empathy.

Serial Killers have consistently very messed up child hoods.
Usually an abusive mother and absent father.
