What if Rouhani and Trump made a back channel deal?
It's clear Gen Salimanyparts had become unhinged and emboldened enough to personally lead expeditions against American interests.
Iraqi politicians (not the Mullahs) knew this leads to no where fast.
Their economy was on life support and Saleimaniparts had resorted to killing their own citizens in the streets.
Methinks they knew the end was imminent and they took a way out that allowed then to retain power and save face.

But DJT’s political wit has been underestimated since he declared candidacy. Take away any bias & the past confirms he is usually a step ahead of each situation that pops up. Like him or not, it’s just a fact.
