Your post reminds me of a Neal Boortz story of his hosting a Soviet professor and his wife. It was in the 80s and Neal lived in Atlanta, Ga.
The Russian couple went to a Super Market for groceries with Neal. When they walked in they couldn't believe the amount of food displayed in all the departments.
Russian guy: 'This place must be for the govt leaders.'
Neal:'No, this is for everyone.'
The Russian guy's wife started to cry.

Yeah, the Chinese government is just as corrupt and deceptive as the Soviets ever were. Their economy is a house of cards that will topple and the Western media, elites and academia will be perplexed. Whole parts of their biggest cities like Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai are ghost towns. I’ve ridden through mile after mile of empty brand new high rises where no one lives. You finally figure out it is a way for the government to keep the economy humming and their housing bubble will make our 2008 crisis look like a small time accounting error. Their wealthy say their stock market is so corrupt their only investment outlet is Chinese real estate. They can invest in US real estate but it is very complicated and illegal due to Chinese big brother currency and foreign investment laws. Once their real estate bubble bursts they are going down the drain and my fear is they may take the rest of the world with them.
