Started young by helping do my first roof at age 12 with one of my uncles and a couple of his kids a couple years older than me.
Worked for him on his side jobs for years and three of his 4 sons went into construction, so I worked with them all over N.O.
Then between buying fixer-upper houses and redoing them, getting into furniture building, cabinetmaking, etc. I just learned more and more. I can go from framing to final finishing.
Hands-on experience is invaluable in any line of work.

Just having a lot of renovations done to your own home is experience enough.
