More like 20 years, the complaint 30 years ago was it was a running back award.

Since 1989, 21 of the 30 winners were QBs. That’s 21 of 35 total QBs to win. Only 6 were RBs. 6 of 41 (44 if you add halfbacks/full backs).

30 years ago, the primary focus of the college offenses was switching from running to passing.

Was a huge issue from 1973-85 when a QB won 1 out of 13

Actually the ‘70s and early ‘80s belonged to the running backs. A running back won it every year from 1972 (Johnny Rodgers was considered a WR/RB) to 1983. When Doug Flutie won in 1984, he was the first QB to win it since Pat Sullivan in 1971.

Quarterbacks started winning on a regular basis once offenses became more passing oriented in the 1990s. But I watched enough college football in the ‘70s and ‘80s and there were a lot of wishbone/veer/option type teams. Many coaches acted as if they were allergic to the forward pass. That’s why RBs dominated the Heisman in that era.

Just a quick count down the list of winners, 83 years and 33 were QBs. Looked like more than 33 were RBs. Just saying... maybe Larry it’s been heavily QB, but not overall.
