You have to look at other guiding principles like the Declaration if Independence, article 1 of the UN Charter (right of self determination of peoples) and the all time classic 'might makes right'. If you can win your war, you have the right to secceed.

Speaking of the Declaration... the mindset of our forefathers regarding the right of the people to secede can be found literally in the first sentence.
