Dumb question

What’s a good 40 time for safety?
Posted on 11/21/19 at 6:07 pm to Lsuhal
Depends on the size of the safety and the scheme.
Some safeties can get away with being high 4.6 guys. Some need to run 4.4s. It all depends.
EDIT - I would consider a good time mid 4.5 or under.

Fast enough to catch Plumlee from behind with a 12 yard head start would be great. (4 flat..ish)

I'd be shocked if more than 5 starting NFL safeties run in the 4.3s

Not a dumb question at all. I’ll be surprised if you don’t get the usual “dumb” answers.
Some people just can’t help themselves.

Depends. Brandon Taylor ran a 4.58 in the combine and I think everyone here would say he was a pretty good safety. I don't think speed is our issue. People are constantly out of position and then being put in the position of coming at a good runner from an angle. This is a terrible position for a defender to be in to make an open-field tackle.

My man this is the rant, this question makes you look like Einstein compared to most.

Your probably right but I’d bet at least your top 40 are in that 4.3-4.5 range with the remaining 24 in the 4.6-4.8 flat range (just talking starters)

there is no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb people who ask questions.

Not many players period run a 4.3

Your right but the fastest do...that’s why I said 4.3-4.5 that being the top tier of safeties...that being said speed isn’t the only thing that makes a great safety it’s just part of it....I don’t quite understand your argument...should we disallow the speed of the 4.3 range because only the fastest run it??? Dude asked a question and I gave a simple answer 4.3-4.5 range is considered great speed for a safety what are you missing??????

That was my first thought but I figured it was coming any second so I answered honestly

This may sound crazy but as far as Safety and LB, the smarter you are, the slower you can be. When you cant put yourself in a good position you need more speed to make up ground.
