I’ve been wondering this too. Is it possible to turn off all the other shite people have built? I don’t want to breeze through it whenever I do finally pull the trigger.

I do think you can turn off the multiplayer aspect, but trust me you'll want in on there. The watchtowers, generators, shelters etc come in clutch when you've taken a beating and need to recharge. Plus working together with other players to build a large project is a ton of fun.
