A Question About "Protected" Picks
Posted on 11/19/19 at 1:26 pm
Posted on 11/19/19 at 1:26 pm
What happens to a pick if it falls in the "protected" range. For example, if Cleveland keeps their pick that is top ten protected this year, would we lose out all together? Or would we get a pick from them in the next year's draft?
Thanks for the clarification.

We wouldn't lose out all together, iirc it goes to 2021 ans maybe top 15-20 protected, then if it doesn't convey it goes to 2022 unprotected.
I'm sure i'm mistakes about the protections but generally speaking we will get something sometime

I think the Cleveland pick becomes two seconds if that happens actually.

Cleveland's 2020 1st round pick to New Orleans (via Atlanta) protected for selections 1-10; if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Cleveland will instead convey its 2021 2nd round pick and 2022 2nd round pick to New Orleans [Atlanta-Cleveland, 1/7/2017; Atlanta-New Orleans, 7/7/2019]

Protected picks always have a stipulation attached to them IE say a team trades it's 2020 1st lottery protected. The next year it will likely be top 10 protected, then the following year top 5, then unprotected the following year.
In the case of Cleveland's pick, it is top 10 protected this year, if it doesn't convey then it turns into 2 2nd rounders

So weird how much more unknown/gambling happens in the NBA vs other leagues. These protected picks and draft lottery...

And, it should be noted, no one expected or expects it to convey this year. The odds of the Cavs making the playoffs always seemed very low.

Pels get two cavs 2nd round picks, 2021 and 2022,
If they dont get top ten protected first 2020.

But, currently 1.5 games back of the 8 seed.
