We’ve discussed this with our CPA, if we move our residence to TX we would save about $30-40K a year in taxes.

This depends on many factors, but for most people the total tax burden would be pretty similar in LA and TX. The bigger difference is the cost of living is much higher in Texas.

My parents recently moved from Texas to Louisiana, taking a pay cut in the process, and all told they are much better off here. They are in a bigger and newer, yet cheaper house, and they are saving thousands in property taxes too. Their utility bills are about half what they were in Texas, so they are saving thousands there too. Groceries are also cheaper, so they are saving thousands more.

The only way I can figure you'd save $40k in taxes by moving to Texas is if you're pulling about $1million per year, so congrats on that.

If you pay that much more in Louisiana state taxes than you would in Texas property taxes then you can afford to live anywhere you want and do pretty much whatever you want.
