When I was younger, I successfully convinced a young woman from Vermont that I grew up on the only paved road in the state of Alabama, and that we only got running water and electricity when I was about 10. She didn't question it at all.

probably because Alabama, by and large, is a joke to the rest of country and people really enjoy making fun of it

believing that no one in Alabama has the internet is called suspension of disbelief

My dad grew up in the south. He lost his accent but could still turn it on when he needed it. I remember us being pulled over in San Jose when I was a kid. My dad turned up the accent and told him "I'm sorry officer. I'm from Alabama and these big fancy freeways are so confusing". Cop let him off with a warning.
