In the original Han is the ONLY one who shot. He blew away a scummy bounty hunter in cold blood because his life depended on it.
Han was a low life criminal who associated with other low life criminals. It's part of what makes his character arc interesting.

But still, he was at gunpoint against a bounty hunter who'd just declared his intention to kill him. Han shooting first was completely justified.
I don't know why Lucas has obsessed over this. Not even a modern court would convict Solo.

Han shooting first and then flipping a credit to the barkeep for the mess is what establishes the character as, well, Han.
