I’ve heard this everywhere I’ve been. What would be an example of this?

It doesn't happen often or on purpose for that matter. But an example would be using one Module of SAP like accounting or inventory management. But keeping your other Business units separate: Purchasing, HR, Sales, Maintenance, Project Management, etc.

The value in SAP is that everything is linked for efficiencies and analytics. You can analyze maintenance costs via inventory used and general ledger entries for example. That's 3 modules right there that were disconnected before the advent of ERP systems.

Or say an engineer is in the Project Mangement module and designing a new pipe to connect some shite. The inventory managment module will tell him what materials and stock items are available, the procurement module will tell him lead times and so forth for planning the project, etc.

People hating on SAP and any ERP system for that matter are stupids.

And that is great from a company standpoint, and for those higher up most of the time, but it isn't always practical in the real world.

My company was just recently the largest implementation into SAP that SAP had ever done. It's been a colossal cluster frick from the get go. We lost control of where shite was, and we still are having trouble with simple inventory control. The sales process aspect of it is ridiculously tedious, and on top of that, one simple mistake in that tedious task of entering an order, sets off a chain that makes you completely start over with that tedious task. It has sales team, and corporate people bitching constantly at each other, even though it's neither of theirs fault, but the system in which they are having to work with in SAP.

I explained recently to some upper level people how it is absurd to expect me to pull out some PowerPoint presentation to follow a 50 something step process to enter a simple order. I don't enter orders daily as with my job getting an order or 2 a month is normal, so it's not something i'm going to remember over time. The reason it's so tedious is b/c it's a process that is supposed to be the same globally for us across all aspects of our business. Well maybe having a universal process for all the different shite we sell simply isn't feasible, b/c it sure as shite isn't working right now, and what's frustrating is that i can't see how it possibly gets better unless they completely customize each process, which is what they didn't want to do and why they went with SAP.

What's even more frustrating is that i know SAP is customizable and can be used very efficiently, but ours has been set up so stupidly, and they are determined to not customize anything to make it better, at least not anytime soon. We have made simple request to make things easier and it falls on deaf ears. Somethign as simple as "hey why can't i search our accounts by their address", and the answer is "why do you need to do that". Makes me want to say, how about you shut the frick up and go right a simple code real quick so i can search the fricking accounts by their street address and make my job as well as everyone else's easier. If you can do it, then fricking do it. Don't be a lazy frick and tell me why you don't want to do it.
