It doesn't happen often or on purpose for that matter. But an example would be using one Module of SAP like accounting or inventory management. But keeping your other Business units separate: Purchasing, HR, Sales, Maintenance, Project Management, etc.

The value in SAP is that everything is linked for efficiencies and analytics. You can analyze maintenance costs via inventory used and general ledger entries for example. That's 3 modules right there that were disconnected before the advent of ERP systems.

Or say an engineer is in the Project Mangement module and designing a new pipe to connect some shite. The inventory managment module will tell him what materials and stock items are available, the procurement module will tell him lead times and so forth for planning the project, etc.


People hating on SAP and any ERP system for that matter are stupids.
