Also a fan of Montezuma. Rent a 4WD vehicle and take the ferry over, if you're flying into San Jose. I don't really suggest driving the peninsula overland from Liberia... we did it during the rainy season and it was... interesting... to say the least.
Just be aware that ATMS in Montezuma sometimes run out of money, so you have a nice 25 minute drive to the nearest one. That's a lot of fun when you get to a restaurant, also remote, that only takes cash and you realize you're short on cash, then you drive back into town to find that the ATMs are out of money... all while your family is waiting for you to return to the restaurant so you can pay out.

That, and don’t get stuck in Puntarenas by missing the last ferry of the day.
We took our 4by and tried to drive to Tamarindo up the coast from Manzanillo. They use the representation of a roads on maps very creatively in Costa Rica. Good times.
