Nova/870.

I bought an 870 super mag new a few years back. It never gets cleaned properly, put in a case or treated well. Iv used it as a push pole while in the boat. It gets set in the mud/water if im in the AG fields hunting. Gets sprayed off with a water hose and a little oil shot in her. Its rusted/beat to shite but it still drops the birds the same.

I own two nice autos....personally I'm not accurate with them no matter how much I practice using them.

I too would second going straight to a 12ga for him. Can always go to lower brass or different shoulder pad. If hes not fully ready for a 12ga now he will be in a year or two anyway.
