It's also the first style many start with when they start learning how to brew. Because of all the hops it can mask things like esters that haven't been consumed by the yeast so it doesn't have to be aged as long.

Compare to a Pilsner that has to be fermented at a cooler temperature and because it's lightly hopped and the lighter body, if it's not aged long enough the esters left over give it a funny taste. In some cases a butterscotch taste if you haven't done what's called a diacetyl rest.
