Why are there FBI agents stationed in Italy to begin with? Isn't that the CIA's job? FBI does not mean Federal Bureau of Italy.

There are FBI offices in most every country. One purpose they serve is to do liaison work on US law enforcement cases that need leg work in that country. Examples would be interviews of subjects for local/state LEOs on cases in their jurisdictions in the US, tracking wanted subjects who have fled the US, etc.

I’m sure their duties far exceed that in those foreign satellite offices, but the above is one aspect of what they do.
