Because so many platforms are now monetized in one way or another. Let's say you originally post your vid clip on youtube. If you give permission - You are now spreading potential clicks across multiple media outlets and their twitter or youtube uploads. If it goes viral on just your channel - you could end up with a nice check from youtube. You don't get anything if it's viewed elsewhere (UNLESS you sell exclusive rights on the video to one specific outlet up front).
